Thousands of Fingers – A Tribute to Steely Dan @ The Center for the Arts
Objects in the Mirror presents Friday and Saturday, May 29-30, 8:00PM $26 members, $27 non-member (Ticket price includes $2 facility fee.  Does not include applicable fee for online purchases.) Pat Jacobsen will present two concert performances of Thousands of Fingers — A Tribute to Steely Dan on May 29th & 30th, with a resurgence of the locally renown jazz-fusion group “Objects In The Mirror.” Whether it’s the funky grooves of Josie or Peg, the hip Black Friday, or straight-ahead rockers like Reelin’ In The Years or Bodhisattva, Steely Dan’s music endures. Since their founding in 1972, the musical “love-child” of vocalist/pianist Donald Fagen and guitarist Walter Becker, known as Steely Dan, set the standard for innovation and earned the respect of music lovers worldwide. Selling tens of millions of albums, with nine of their singles ranked in Billboard’s Top 20, Steely Dan recently released a reunion album.  Two Against Nature won four Grammy Awards including Album of the Year, proving once again what a compelling force they continue to be in the world of music. Steely Dan was clearly an important influence to all the band members in our formative years. They use very sophisticated chord changes, unusual instrumentations and harmonically fascinating music-theory in their music. Every member of this production has studied Steely’s music during our careers. “With our shows, we’re trying to give people more than they’re used to and more than we’re used to, and give the listening audience more credit for being able to appreciate a different kind of music.” said guitarist Perry Mills. Several years ago, Objects in the Mirror performed two similar SRO shows at the Center as an aside from their original music and concerts.[...]

“Between Heaven and Earth: The Progress of the Beloved Community.” @ Emmanuel Episcopal Church
The Josiah Royce Society Nevada County chapter Presents “Between Heaven and Earth: The Progress of the Beloved Community.” A talk by Professor Randall Auxier Professor of Philosophy at Southern Illinois University The talk will be about the religious background of Josiah Royce’s family and how it affected his thought, specifically the utopian ideas in the part of New York they came from before journeying to California. These ideas will be explored and compared with John Bunyan’s “Pilgrim’s Progress” and formed the roots of the idea of beloved community in Royce’s works. Monday June 8th 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church 235 S. Church Street, Grass Valley, CA The Josiah Royce Society was established in 2003 to encourage the study of the life and work of the American philosopher Josiah Royce. He was born in Grass Valley in 1855. He died in Cambridge, MA, in 1916 after an illustrious career as Harvard professor and international speaker. “Our fellows are known to be real and have their inner life, because they are for each of us, the endless treasury of more ideas. They answer our questions, they tell us news, they make comments, they pass judgments, they express novel combinations of feelings and they relate to us stories, they argue with us, and take counsel with us…Our fellows furnish us with the constantly needed supplement to our own fragmentary meaning.” JOSIAH ROYCE, The World and the Individual, II (written in 1899 and 1901) For further information: Robin Wallace–530/265-9397 Iven Lourie–530/277-5380 (cell) www.Roycesociety.org

CFA DISCOVER SERIES: Pinnacles, Number Station, Bull Goose Loony @ Off Center Stage
OFF CENTER STAGE The Center for the Arts’ DISCOVER SERIES presents Friday, June 12, 8:00PM $10 member suggested donation, $12 non-member (Ticket price includes $2 facility fee.  Does not include applicable fee for online purchases.) PINNACLES After holing up in the studio for the past 4 months recording the followup to their debut album, Automaton, Nevada City experimental rockers Pinnacles are taking the stage at Off Center in Grass Valley for their first show of 2015. Pinnacles comes prepared with a new batch of songs interspersed with tracks off their debut, evolving their many influences in the post rock, math rock, and progressive rock genres into a sharply focused style that is unique unto themselves. Pinnacles formed in the Spring of 2013 when Justin Hunt (sBach, Them Hills, The Bears) brought drummer Zach Peach (This is Radiation, El Dorado) and guitarist Robbie Landsburg (Ghost Pines) together to start working on the material that would become the album Automaton. Jesse Kinseth (The Bears) soon joined the band on bass, and the band immediately began recording in their home studios. Despite their relatively brief period as a performing band, Pinnacles has already played multiple sellout shows in the Northern California area. With Hunt and Landsburg sharing guitar and vocal duties, their music combines highly technical guitar playing with choirlike vocal passages, expertly held together by the rhythm section of Kinseth and Peach. Live, the band confidently maintains solidity throughout the shifting time signatures and dynamic changes that permeate their music. Music lovers will appreciate Pinnacles’ accessibility while they push musical boundaries and challenge the listener in a cerebral yet visceral way. They are a mustsee for anyone interested in the Northern[...]

Steve Smith and Vital Information NYC Edition @ The Center for the Arts
The Center for the Arts presents Friday, June 12, 8:00PM General Admission $24 members, $27 non-member (Ticket price includes $2 facility fee.  Does not include applicable fee for online purchases.) Featuring: Steve Smith – Drums (Steps Ahead/Journey) Mark Soskin – Keyboards (Sonny Rollins/Herbie Mann) Baron Browne – Bass (Jean-Luc Ponty/Billy Cobham) Vinny Valentino – Guitar (Bill Evans/Jimmy McGriff) Andy Fusco – Alto sax (Buddy Rich/John Pizzarelli) “Smith’s explosive solos and intricate timekeeping served to gain him much acclaim from sources such as Modern Drummer magazine, whose readers recently voted him the #1 Fusion Drummer of 2012. He has been voted #1 “All-Around” Drummer five years in a row, in 2001 Modern Drummer magazine named Steve as one of the “Top 25 Drummer of All Time.” – Drummerworld Magazine In a musical world where keeping a working band has proven difficult for many bandleaders, drummer-bandleader Steve Smith has managed to keep three bands working for the past three decades. His jazz-rock band, Steve Smith and Vital Information, has been touring and recording for more than 30 years, while his “straight-ahead” groups Steve Smith and Buddy’s Buddies, made up of Buddy Rich Alumni (with three album releases), and Steve Smith’s Jazz Legacy (a group dedicated to playing the music of some of great drumset masters such as Art Blakey, Elvin Jones and Tony Williams), have toured for five years and released two albums and a DVD. Therefore, it makes perfect sense for this prolific recording artist and bandleader, who has made a career out of amalgamating the many twists and turns of his musical calling, to blend all three bands for a 2015 studio album release entitled The Skyline Sessions on the BFM Jazz label. The updated[...]
